Hagia Sophia is a representative relic of the Byzantine Empire and is considered a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. While it was used as a Christian cathedral, it was also utilized as the center of the Ottoman Caliphate. The government of the Republic of Turkey operated it as a museum starting in 1935, a role that continued until July 2020.
